In an article published in the Wednesday, April 11, 1934 issue of the Port Isabel Pilot featured a story about Del Mar Resort which was a popular destination on Boca Chica Beach before Padre Island became a popular tourist destination. The article reads as follows:
In an interview with Colonel Sam Robertson of Del Mar, the colonel says he will open the resort about April 15. There will be 26 new cottages ready for occupancy. The cottages this year will have every modern convenience. They have all been sealed with Celotex, and actual test shows buildings sealed with Cleotex to be 19 degrees cooler than those without it. Each cottage will have shower and bath, and private telephone.
All cottages have been made fifty per cent or more stronger than originally, by being bolted to stronger foundations, re-enforced walls, roofs, etc. They have also been built above storm tide.
A new dance hall and restaurant are being built, which will be completed about the first of June.
The Colonel has built the cottages as they are today after having gone throgt the September hurricane at Del Mar and seeing the effects of the wind there. The bridge across the pass has been repaired, and is in use. Instead of being 300 feet in length as previous, it is now approximately 800 feet long.
