PASTOR FINDS FISH IN CAR~ <Our Past Index>

In an article published in the Wednesday, June 21, 1933 issue of the Port Isabel Pilot featured a story about a minister who was almost caught fishing on Sunday. The article reads as follows:

Rev. O.C. Crow, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Brownsville, and who last week brought to a successful close the revival he conducted in Port Isabel, is having difficulty in explaining, how he, a minister of the gospel, came in to possession of a number of Kingfish, on a Sunday.

It is generally understood that it is taboo for a minister of the gospel to go fishing on Sunday, even in Port Isabel, where it is the favorite day of all good fish to be caught. However, Rev. Crow, returning to his home in Brownville, after the conclusion of services at the Methodist Church here on a recent Sunday evening, carried with him, in the back of his car, a number of large Kingfish.

But Rev. Crow, in all fairness and justice, did not catch the fish. Some admirers who had failed to remember the Sabbath Day and to keep it Holy, were guilty of going fishing on that day, to ease their conscience placed the fish in Rev. Crow’s car, while he was engaged in conducting services in the Methodist Church.
