In an article published in the Wednesday, November 8, 1933 issue of the Port Isabel Pilot described a "Redfish Day" where large amounts of fish were caugh in the surf from Padre Island. The article reads as follows:
Sunday may well have been designated “Redfish Day” judging from the number of choice specimen of the finny tribe that were caught by anglers fishing in the surf form Padre Island Sunday.
Almost without exception, every angler visiting the Island returned with splendid catches of redfish, some of which weighed well over 20 pounds, while the average was from 8 to 10 pounds. While no accurate record of the number caught is available, local fishing guides estimate that at least 500 or more redfish were caught during the day.
