WIDENING VALLEY HIGHWAY~ <Our Past Index>

In an article published in the Wednesday, November 8, 1933 issue of the Port Isabel Pilot ran a story under the title "Rendered Unto Scissors" about the widening of the highway between Harlingen and Brownsville. The article reads as follows:

Work started Thursday on the State’s program of widening the highway between Harlingen and Brownsville, which will include the expenditure of $165,000 of federal funds in Cameron County and the employment of around 800 men each week over a period of four months.

The concrete will be widened to a minimum of 22 feet on straight-of-ways and a maximum of 30 feet on curves. The present hauling of dirt will continue for about 30 days, was stated, when contracts will be let for the laying of additional concrete. Bids will be called sometime in December.
