In an article published in the Wednesday, December 7, 1932 issue of the Port Isabel Pilot ran a story about a cranberry substitute called "Roselle" or "Florida Cranberries". The article reads as follows:
J. H. Mace and wife are proving that his wonderful Valley can raise practically everything that is needed. At this season of the year cranberries are shipped into the Valley in large lots, but these people are raising a good substitute for cranberries and we would suggest that you buy some of their product and try it out now, so you will be convinced before you are ready to serve your Christmas turkey.
This substitute that lacks only one ingredient, benzaoic acid, of being the same as cranberries and makes a jelly that resembles cranberry, and there are many other recipes provided for its use, according to a bulletin issued in Florida. We now have a copy of this bulletin and will publish it in full, including the recipes, in next issue.
In the meantime patronize home industry by purchasing some “Roselle, or Florida Cranberries” from Mr. And Mrs. Mace. They live on the Brown tract adjoining the Knox Smith land on the west and the address is Route 1, Rio Hondo.
