Lighthouse Market Day 10/13 9-4p ~ Live Music & MORE!

On Saturday, October 13, 2012, the City of Port Isabel and the Port Isabel Museums will be hosting their annual Lighthouse Market Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Lighthouse grounds.

Vendors on the Lighthouse Square will be offering a variety of food, antiques, arts & crafts, art and more. For vendor information, click here.

Special admission prices to museums and lighthouse! The Port Isabel Historical Museum and the Treasures of the Gulf Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will have a special admission price of $1.00 for each site. The Lighthouse will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. also with a special admission price of $1.00. Come join in the fun, enjoy historic Port Isabel during Lighthouse Market Day.

The Lighthouse Market Day is an extension of the Museums of Port Isabel’s mission to collect, preserve, and interpret the art, history, and culture of the Laguna Madre area through preservation, educational programs, tours, exhibits, and workshops. Held annually on the second Saturday of October, Lighthouse Market Day celebrates our historic roots, our community and the beauty of the Port Isabel Lighthouse.

Live music by MEZA! Originally started as a side project for the Woodsboro High School Band in 2008, MEZA is now a versatile trio playing a variety of music such as rock, oldies and even country music. David Meza Jr. is the lead guitar and vocals. Edward Meza plays bass and David Meza, Sr. (Dad) on drums. MEZA has played many venues in the Corpus Christi area, such as The House of Rock and Disc-Go-Round, and local clubs in Woodsboro. Additionally, MEZA has won second place in the Battle of The Bands in Corpus Christi in 2009. They also have played for local benefits such as Back to School Bash, Christmas on the Square and local Church Festivals.

Queen Isabella Market Day 4/14

The Museums of Port Isabel and the City of Port Isabel invite you to enjoy a day filled with live entertainment, vendors, food, family fun on the grounds of the Historic Port Isabel Lighthouse! Queen Isabella Market Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 14th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge to the event. Vendors offering collectibles, antiques, local art, jewelry and more will be lining the sidewalks around the lighthouse. A tent with tables and chairs near the live entertainment will offer the opportunity to sit down and relax while enjoying some tasty tamales, baked goods or other dishes local vendors and restaurants will be offering. Or just roll down the grassy hill of the lighthouse! Relax and let us entertain you during a family fun day in Port Isabel!

The Port Isabel Lighthouse will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission just $1.00 during Market Day. And plan to visit the Port Isabel Historical Museum and the Treasures of the Gulf Museum, just a short walk across Highway 100 where admission is also just $1.00 to each site.

The Museums of Port Isabel Celebrates their Annual Los Colores del Muerto!

The Museums of Port Isabel, in collaboration with the City of Port Isabel, the Laguna Madre Museum Foundation, the Port Isabel Economic Development Corporation, the Laguna Madre Art League, their Annual  Day of the Dead festival – “Los Colores Del  Muerto” on Saturday, October 30, 2010 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Port Isabel Historical Museum, 317 E. Railroad Ave. in Port Isabel. The Port Isabel Lighthouse will be closed, until further notice as steps on the interior are restored.

Dia de los Muerto, Day of the Dead, is a Mexican custom of celebrating all souls and all saints day in a festive atmosphere.  Because the Mexican culture  find joy in remembering loved ones who have passed away, they spend a night and a day at the burial sight of the deceased family members, honoring the memories of their lives. Traditionally, the Day of the Dead was a three day and three night festival that mixed Spanish Catholicism with Mesoamerican Indian roots. The ancient custom has now been transformed to fit the Mexican-American households of today. The Mexican culture believes that deceased children return to visit Earth on the last day of October, and the faithful dead return on November 2nd. At this time every year, families gather at cemeteries to clean and adorn the graves of their deceased loved ones. 3:00 p.m.: Inside the Treasures of the Gulf Museum (Special Day of the Dead Play by Gloria Bates)
3:00 – 5:00 p.m.: Outdoor event featuring Ken Trevino and students from the Port Isabel with Short Stories, Poetry, & Music
5:00 – 7:00 p.m.: Presentation with Manuel Hinojosa on “The History of Day of the Dead”
7:00 – 8:00 p.m. – Encore presentation of “Day of the Dead” play by Gloria Bates

DAY OF THE DEAD T-SHIRTS: A limited number of Day of the Dead t-shirts will be available! Based on the poster design, the artwork features a stylized skull using motifs important to Port Isabel’s history, including the Port Isabel Lighthouse, a shrimp boat and Gulf shrimp. They will be available for sale at the Museums Gift Shop.
